Apple Enables AI by Default in Latest Software Update

Apple released a software update on January 27, 2025, enabling Apple Intelligence by default on supported iPhones, iPads, and Macs. The updates iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3 mark a significant step in integrating Apple’s AI features across its devices. Previously, users had to activate Apple Intelligence manually during setup, but the latest update ensures the AI system is automatically turned on upon installation. Apple Intelligence, currently in beta, is available in select English-speaking regions and includes features including text rewriting, image generation, and email summarization. Apple has stated that this phased rollout allows for testing and ensures adequate server capacity. Users who do not wish to use Apple Intelligence can disable it in the device settings.

The update also removes AI-generated summaries for news apps after reports of inaccurate notifications. In December, the BBC and other news outlets highlighted cases where AI-generated summaries distorted headlines. A recent example involved Apple’s AI incorrectly stating that Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal had made a personal announcement, which was false. In response to concerns from news organizations, Apple has disabled AI summarization for news and entertainment apps and introduced italics to distinguish AI-generated notifications. The company plans to refine the feature before reintroducing it in a future update.
