Google has appointed Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously the Chief Technology Officer at Google DeepMind, as its new Senior Vice President and Chief AI Architect. Kavukcuoglu will report directly to CEO Sundar Pichai and relocate from London to the company’s headquarters in Mountain View, California. In a company memo, Pichai stated that Kavukcuoglu will focus on “accelerating how we bring our world-leading models into our products, with the goal of more seamless integration, faster iteration, and greater efficiency.” This move reflects Google’s growing emphasis on artificial intelligence and its ongoing efforts to embed the technology into more products across the organization.
The appointment comes amid rising pressure on Google to translate its AI research and infrastructure into profitable tools. Since 2023, the company has been integrating its DeepMind unit more closely into the broader Google business. Google announced it would invest $75 billion into AI infrastructure this year while offering buyouts in other departments to manage expenses. At its recent I/O conference, Google revealed a new $249.99 monthly AI subscription plan and collaborations for Android XR devices featuring its Gemini assistant. As competition in AI intensifies with companies like Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and OpenAI making similar investments, Google’s leadership change signals a push to deliver practical results from its AI initiatives.
