Danone—the global food and beverage company behind brands like Activia, Silk, and Evian—is rolling out a large-scale effort to support smallholder dairy farmers while addressing one of agriculture’s most pressing climate challenges: methane emissions. Through a new partnership with social enterprise Sistema.bio, the company will equip 6,500 farmers with biodigesters by 2030. These low-tech, high-impact systems convert livestock waste into biogas and natural fertilizer—cutting methane at the source while delivering practical benefits on the farm. The program will launch in Mexico, India, and Morocco, targeting regions where small-scale dairy operations are central to rural livelihoods.
This move builds on Danone’s broader goal to reduce methane emissions from its fresh milk supply by 30% by the end of the decade. Already, the company reports a 25% reduction since 2020. But beyond the numbers, this initiative reflects a shift toward climate solutions that also strengthen local economies. By improving waste management, reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers, and enhancing soil health, these biodigesters are designed to deliver lasting environmental and social value—advancing sustainability not just in principle, but in practice.
