Rathi Murthy, former Chief Technology Officer at Expedia, has joined Varo Bank as its new CTO. Varo Bank, a San Francisco-based digital financial institution, announced Murthy’s appointment as part of its efforts to advance its technology capabilities. Her career spans leadership roles at several major companies, including Verizon Media, Gap, American Express, eBay, and Yahoo. While at Expedia for three years, she contributed to the integration of AI technologies across its platform.
Murthy departed Expedia in May of last year following what the company cited as a “violation of company policy.” The departure coincided with the exit of another Executive, Sreenivas Rachamadugu. At the time, Murthy responded to the situation by defending her record, noting that she has consistently upheld a high standard of integrity throughout her career. Her move to Varo Bank signals a continuation of her focus on applying technology to enhance customer experience and operational systems within large-scale digital platforms. Murthy said on LinkedIn, “I’ve been deeply inspired by Varo’s mission to make financial inclusion and opportunity a reality for all — empowering everyone with the tools to move their lives forward,”
