OpenAI Secures $40B Funding Amid Strategic Shift Towards Open Models

OpenAI has secured $40 billion in new funding, valuing the company at $300 billion post-investment. This marks one of the largest funding rounds ever for a startup. The investment, led by Japan’s SoftBank Group, includes an initial $10 billion with plans to contribute an additional $30 billion later this year, contingent on certain conditions. OpenAI stated that the capital will be used to expand its infrastructure, advance AI research, and support its growing user base of more than 500 million ChatGPT users weekly. SoftBank emphasized the importance of massive computing power in achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and eventually Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI), highlighting OpenAI as a key partner in that vision.

At the same time, OpenAI announced a significant change in its strategy by committing to develop a more open generative AI model. This move comes in response to increasing competition from companies including Meta and Chinese firm DeepSeek, which promote open-source AI models allowing greater flexibility and control. OpenAI’s shift reflects pressure from governments and corporations seeking more secure and customizable AI solutions. The decision also addresses ongoing criticism from figures including Elon Musk, who advocate for open-access AI development. CEO Sam Altman acknowledged, "We've been thinking about this for a long time, but other priorities took precedence. Now it feels important to do."
