Tesla’s Software Chief David Lau to Depart After Over a Decade

Bloomberg reports that David Lau, Tesla’s long-time Head of Software Engineering, is stepping down from the company. Lau joined Tesla in 2012 as a Senior Firmware Engineering Manager and quickly advanced, becoming Vice President of Software by 2017. Throughout his tenure, he played a key role in developing Tesla’s vehicle firmware, user interfaces, and over-the-air update systems. His responsibilities extended to mobile app development, server-side infrastructure for telemetry and diagnostics, data analytics, automation controls, and product security. While no reason has been disclosed for his departure, Lau is recognized as a central figure in shaping Tesla’s software approach across its vehicles, services, and production systems.

With the launch of the Model S in 2012, Tesla introduced features including responsive touchscreens, continuous software updates, and integrated digital services, offering a more seamless, phone-like experience.
