The big news: Database company MongoDB announced that it would buy Voyage AI to improve the trustworthiness and relevance of its AI platform. Voyage’s goal is to cut down on “hallucinations” of false or misleading info from AI, and extracts meaning from highly specialized and domain-specific text and unstructured data from legal and financial documents to images, code, and enterprise knowledge bases.   

On the move: Cloud and industrial AI software company IFS named Matt Breslin as President, North America. The former Chief Revenue Officer at Upland Software, Breslin will drive Industrial AI and cloud adoption across new and existing customers in North America.

The buzz: Microsoft announced that it was shutting down Skype on May 5, 14 years after buying the internet chat and calling company for $8.5 billion. In a statement, Microsoft said it would shift its focus to Microsoft Teams.

On the rise: Automated endpoint management program NinjaOne announced $500 million in Series C extensions, bringing its valuation to $5 billion. The funding came in separate tranches that were led by ICONIQ Growth and CapitalG, Alphabet’s independent investment fund, with participation from other private investors.

What’s next: Nvidia’s Earth-2, a generative AI-powered weather forecasting service, has been optimized for the Continental U.S. after being trained on Taiwanese weather patterns. Powered by Nvidia’s Corrdiff, it uses generative AI to sharpen the precision of coarse-resolution weather models at 500 times the speed of traditional models, the company said.
